You mean those aren't gnats?

I was talking to one of my room mates on our small front porch area, and the gnats were being especially persistent in flying around our faces. I asked her what the bugs were called in the language here, and she surprised me by saying "nyamuk," which is a word I already knew. "That is a mosquito?!" In the Southeast, we grow real mosquitoes! You can see the shape even when they're flying, and the bites swell and itch for days. These are so tiny that I seriously thought they were gnats. Add one to the blessings of being here: smaller and relatively less annoying mosquitoes!
